The Wizard Behind the Curtain | Tim Kelly

The Wizard Behind the Curtain | Tim Kelly

Every successful company has someone behind the scenes quietly keeping things moving in the right direction. At JC&A, that person is Tim Kelly.

Tim joined JC&A in March 1997, just months after the company was founded. His friend Kim Boucher, Jay’s first accountant, introduced the two when she decided the general contracting world wasn’t for her. Nearly 30 years later, the rest is JC&A history.

Ask Tim how his role has changed since then and his answer is classic Tim: “Same role, just a much bigger company.”

As a longtime Partner and Chief Financial Officer, Tim has helped build the financial foundation that supported JC&A’s growth from a young company into what it is today.

Around the office, Tim is our wizard behind the curtain. He doesn’t look for the spotlight, but there is very little happening at JC&A that doesn’t somehow cross his desk. Banking, insurance, surety, forecasting, cash management and countless decisions most of us never see—Tim has quietly helped guide the company every step of the way.

Of course, anyone who knows Tim knows there’s another side to him, too.

He’s a big teddy bear. A jokester. Always ready with a story, his contagious laugh or a perfectly timed comment.

But don’t let any of that fool you.

When something needs to get done, Tim can put the hammer down. He knows the business inside and out, isn’t afraid to make the tough call and brings a steady, common-sense perspective when things get complicated. That combination has earned him tremendous respect across JC&A and beyond.

And Tim’s impact extends far beyond the balance sheet.

When asked about his proudest moment at JC&A, he doesn’t point to a financial milestone or major project. He points to Cal’s House in Mansfield.

Cal was a young man living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy whose family needed help making their home handicap accessible. JC&A employees and subcontractors volunteered their time and expertise to retrofit the house and make everyday life easier for the family.

“I couldn’t have been prouder to be part of JC&A than I was then.”

That commitment to giving back has been a constant throughout Tim’s career. When Team IMPACT was just an idea, he helped establish the organization’s financial and legal foundation and later served as Treasurer. It remains close to his heart today, with the Team IMPACT Gala ranking among his favorite JC&A traditions.

Giving back has been a family affair, too. Tim and his wife, Linda, along with their daughters, Jessica and Julia, have all been involved with Team IMPACT over the years.

Family has always come first for Tim. When Jessica and Julia were growing up, he never missed one of their games—a lesson he still shares with JC&A’s younger parents today. He knows how quickly those years go by.

That family side of Tim carries over to JC&A, too. Every Halloween, his office is a favorite stop for our little trick-or-treaters, complete with decorations and, naturally, king-size candy bars.

It’s a small thing, but it says a lot about him.

For Tim, The JC&A Way still comes back to the same principles Jay talked about in the company’s earliest days: serve our clients so they want to work with us again, take care of our employees like family and give back to the communities around us.

Nearly 30 years later, those values remain at the core of JC&A.

Tim may prefer being behind the curtain, but his impact is hard to miss. He has helped shape JC&A through three decades of growth—and helped make sure that as the company got bigger, the values it was built on stayed very much the same.
