J. Calnan & Associates (JC&A), a leader in preconstruction and construction management services across the Northeast, proudly congratulates the ADA Forsyth Institute (AFI) on being named a Gold Award recipient in the 22nd Annual Team Massachusetts Economic Impact Awards, presented by MassEcon.
This prestigious recognition highlights AFI’s extraordinary contributions to the Massachusetts economy through its investment in cutting-edge research infrastructure, job creation, and community engagement. The award follows the successful completion and full occupancy of AFI’s new 100,000-square-foot, LEED Platinum-certified headquarters at 100 Chestnut Street in Somerville, delivered in partnership with JC&A.
Completed in two phases, the facility represents a transformative milestone in oral health innovation. Phase I included nearly 70,000 square feet of R&D laboratories, clinical treatment areas, and collaborative workspaces, while Phase II added an additional 30,000 square feet of advanced laboratory space—establishing the largest oral health research facility in the world.
“On behalf of the entire JC&A team, we extend our sincere congratulations to ADA Forsyth on this well-deserved recognition,” said Chet Braun, Partner and Project Executive at JC&A. “We are incredibly proud to have been part of this transformative project. This award reflects not only AFI’s leadership in scientific advancement, but also the shared vision and collaboration that brought this world-class facility to life. It is rewarding to see the impact this project is already making on research, innovation, and the broader community.”
Since relocating to Somerville in 2025, AFI has significantly expanded its clinical and research capabilities, supporting over $100 million in research funding and fostering a growing workforce. The facility also serves as a hub for innovation—offering incubator space, advanced core equipment, and serving as the authoritative testing site for the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance program.
JC&A collaborated closely with North River Leerink, JLL, Redgate, Gensler, and Buro Happold to deliver a highly specialized, future-ready environment designed to support AFI’s diverse research disciplines, including microbiology, immunology, craniofacial biology, and bioengineering.
“The success of this project is a testament to the power of partnership,” Braun added. “AFI’s mission to advance oral health aligns with our commitment to delivering complex, high-performance spaces that enable innovation and discovery.”
As AFI continues to push the boundaries of oral health research and patient care, JC&A looks forward to seeing the lasting impact of this landmark project on the industry and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
