SportLifestyle Brand works with Spagnolo Gisness & Associates, J. Calnan & Associates and AHA Consulting Engineers to Unveil State-of-the Art Building with Sustainable Features and High Tech, Fashion-Forward Design
1/27/2009, Westford, MA — PUMA, the global athletic brand known for both sport and fashion, officially opened its new corporate headquarters in an official ceremony attended by Massachusetts Congresswoman Niki Tsongas on Friday, January 23rd. 10 Lyberty Way, located in Westford, features cutting edge design as well as eco-friendly and sustainable characteristics. PUMA North America worked collaboratively with top industry leaders to design and build the new headquarters — architects Spagnolo Gisness & Associates, construction management firm, J. Calnan & Associates, and mechanical/electrical/plumbing engineers, AHA Consulting Engineers. PUMA’s partners successfully translated the brand vision and personality in the new building, which house the US operations for sales, marketing, retail, product merchandising, customer service, operations and finance.
Measuring 129,000 square feet on 19 acres, PUMA North America is a two-story building holding 140 offices and 20 meeting spaces, including a Brand Center for sales and merchandising meetings as well as brand events, and four café areas and a food prep facility. A modern 1,500 square foot gymnasium including locker rooms and showers was built exclusively for the employees, to encourage a healthy and active lifestyle. Multiple product displays were designed to uniquely showcase PUMA’s footwear, apparel and accessories, including a catwalk in the front lobby as well as a gallery display of historical PUMA products such as the Mostro and PUMA Clyde. In line with the brand’s playful demeanor, the signature PUMA Red, quirky PUMA icons as well as the PUMA Cat are featured throughout the building. Interior highlights include a visually striking 60 foot long skylight as well as a lobby boasting an open atrium with 23 foot high ceilings and glass rails.
The entire team worked together to ensure the new offices went above and beyond the demands of today’s environmental standards, reducing energy, using recyclable/reusable materials, producing minimal waste and utilizing sustainable construction methods. In an effort to harness the sun’s natural energy, photovoltaic solar panels were installed to convert sunlight into renewable electrical energy. To increase the use of natural light and reduce the need for electrical lights, sixteen solar tubes were installed as well as the addition of 60 new windows in the renovated existing building. Windows are tinted to reduce heating and cooling requirements and rooms are affixed with energy efficient lights and motion sensors. Many building materials, such as bricks and drywall, were reused, recycled and reprocessed on site during the construction process. The roof was made of 135,000 square feet of environmentally friendly white TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin), rather than rubber. Several interior materials kept the environment in mind including recycled, renewable and biodegradable linoleum floors, eco solution carpet tiles and partially recycled content ceiling tiles.
PUMA purchased the land and former building in August 2007. The design of 10 Lyberty Way was a complete renovation, including an addition of a second story. PUMA officially broke ground on 10 Lyberty Way in October 2007, with full completion of the renovation in November 2008. Employees moved into the building in mid-December 2008. Richards Barry Joyce & Partners, a full service real estate advisory firm, represented PUMA in this purchase. Blackwater Design was responsible for landscape design. Odeh Consultants, Inc. served as the structural engineer. Meisner Brem engineers conducted the land survey and assisted with the town approval process. CB Richard Ellis was the project manager.
270 people from Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island currently work out of the PUMA North America, with room for growth and new employees. The company has been based in Westford since 1999 with previous headquarters in Brockton and Framingham.
