3/20/2009, Quincy, MA — J. Calnan & Associates, one of New England’s leading construction management firms specializing in pre-construction services and challenging construction projects, is proud to report that The Park School, located in Brookline, MA recently received the Honor Award for Design Excellence from the Boston Society of Architects. The design team of Chan Krieger Sieniewicz submitted the project for the bi-annual K-12 facility awards which were co-sponsored by the Boston and New York Chapters of the American Institute of Architects.
“It’s a fantastic honor as the competition was open to all New England and New York architects for any educational facility world-wide, as well as any project built in NY or New England by firms from outside the region,” said Principal Patrick Tedesco at Chan Krieger Sieniewicz. He continues, “The project was indeed a great collaborative effort and the entire team did an outstanding job.”
The purpose of this project was to improve the classroom experience for The Park School’s students in grades one through five by enlarging and updating instructional spaces. The scope included a 20,000-square-foot classroom addition to the existing main building, as well as 7,500 square-feet of renovations to the school’s existing classrooms and library. The addition is carefully situated on a constrained site and incorporates a new landscape and roadway design intended to reassign the back of the school as a new, prominent entrance for the student community. The expansion provides larger and better equipped classrooms and complements the renovation of the 1971 era classrooms within the existing building.
The Park School team worked together to design and implement sustainable construction methodologies to incorporate energy efficiency, minimal waste and reduce consumption of natural resources whenever possible. The team carried out a comprehensive job-waste recycling program where all recyclable materials such as bricks, concrete, drywall, metal and steel were reused, recycled and reprocessed onsite. They replaced all the windows with thermally glazed units and made significant upgrades to the mechanical equipment and controls. Additional sustainable features include low VOC emitting paints, carpets and adhesives and efficient HVAC, lighting and plumbing fixtures.
As a result of the new addition, the number of students per class in Grades 1 – 5 was reduced from sixteen to fourteen, and the number of sections at each grade level increased from three to four. The new addition also accommodates the growing enrollment at the school which boasts a student body of approximately 550.
Jay Calnan, President of JC&A added “The team at Chan Krieger Sieniewicz really understood the needs and goals of The Park School and designed a unique space that would accommodate the school’s growth objectives. It was a privilege to partner with such a distinguished firm and to execute this world-class design.”
