iRobot on Track to Produce US Army Robots and Spare Parts for Training and Simulation
5/9/2008, Quincy, MA — Bedford, MA–J. Calnan & Associates, Inc., recently completed a 150,000sf interior fit-out of three two-story, steel/masonry buildings at 8, 10, 12 Crosby Drive in Bedford for iRobot’s new world headquarters. This keeps them on schedule to produce more than 200 robots and spare parts for the U.S. Army for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation. The $9.5 million project designed by ADD, Inc., was launched in June, 2007 and completed in April, 2008.

iRobot is the manufacturer of Roomba and Scooba vacuuming robots as well as unmanned military vehicles, explosive detecting & disposing robots, and many other new-age innovative products.
The establishment of its new world headquarters required extensive interior demolition of the three existing buildings and the construction of new high-end offices as well as R&D and testing facilities and the installation of new mechanical, electrical and security systems.
J. Calnan & Associates (JCA) team members on the project included Brian Healy, Peter Locke, Eli Constantinou, and Michael Ensminger. Constantinou, the Project Manager, noted that the original intent was to finish all three buildings at the same time but after the project began, iRobot asked JCA to turn over one building ahead of schedule in order to meet their staffing needs. JCA completed that building three months ahead of schedule.
He pointed out that the completed project has many unique features including a museum on the first floor of the main building with a rock ‘climbing’ wall. This wall is used to display the “R-Gator,” a John Deere vehicle modified by iRobot to operate un-manned. Constantinou complimented ADD, Inc., for “doing a great job pulling together some really nice design features while being budget conscious.” He also praised the work performed by subcontractors such as Rivers Electric, L.C. Anderson (HVAC), Cintas/Fire Suppression Systems Group, Dan-Cel (plumbing), and Fabrizio Corporation (millwork). He pointed out that this was JCA’s first project with iRobot and said “iRobot was fabulous to work with. They were able to make decisions on a timely basis which kept the project ahead of schedule. It was a team working environment all the way.”
